Top Tips For Taking A Dog on Holiday: All your biggest FAQs answered
- Best Dog-Friendly Accommodation? Research accommodation for your dog in the same way you would for yourself. I know enough work goes into finding the perfect place for you and your family but your pet needs to be happy too!
In the same way, you envisage all the family in each of your shortlisted places to stay, now you need to consider your dog too. Is there enough space to play? What are the dos and don’ts for your pet during your stay? Where will they sleep? How dog-friendly is it really? Are there dog-friendly beaches, restaurants and places to visit nearby? Are there other pets there?
How well will your dog-friendly log cabin fit your dog personally? (As well as your family too!).
- What do they supply? In the havoc that is getting ready to go on holiday, it’s easy to forget to pack for your dog. Don’t forget your dog’s home comforts, just like you do for your children (and yourself!).
Your dog’s belongings have limits just like everyone else so check what will be supplied at your accommodation. You will of course need to bring your safe and comfortable leads plus snuggly blankets but what about food and water bowls for example? Will they be ready and waiting for you on arrival or do you need to bring your own?
Even if food is supplied, do of course bring familiar bits along in case your dog doesn’t like what’s on offer! Some lodges, like Otter Falls in Devon, require you to book your dog in, free of charge. We find that most places charge an extra fee per dog, around £20-£30 per week per dog is what we consider to be a normal range.
- What will you do? Your dog’s having a well-deserved holiday so you need to have things you can all do together – that means research but not as much as you think. Instead of turning to the depths of Google ask the owner of your dog-friendly accommodation.
Not only are they likely to be local dog owners themselves, but like us, they’ll have spent years answering the same questions for other holidaying dog owners. They’ll have a great range of tried and tested places for you to start with, and then of course you can compile your own research.
Don’t forget to think about how safe beautiful-sounding places will be for your excited dog. Additionally, for the journey to and from your destination, which could be long, you’ll need to think about comfort and safety.
- Dog-sitters? As much as you love being with your dog, there may be times when you want to leave your dog at your accommodation if they have dog-sitters ready to give your dog a new experience. Check whether the service needs to be booked in advance.
- Build slowly: Give yourself and your dog time to prepare for the trip, if you know he’s a bit frisky this is a good time to brush up on commands, maybe you’ll need to prepare for a slightly different routine some time in advance, there may even be a jab or two needed.
If you haven’t had your dog micro-chipped, you may suddenly feel this is something you want to do. Certainly a good idea if you’re heading to a magnificent, dog-friendly rural location such as lodges in Suffolk or Norfolk. Here dog-friendly beaches and wilds could see your dog bounding off into the distance!
Whilst everyone else is getting their last-minute holiday supplies, a trip to the vet’s or grooming parlour could well be in order to make sure your dog’s in the best shape for a glorious family vacation.
- Where to stay in the UK? For luxury dog-friendly accommodation, our lodges and log cabins in Norfolk, Suffolk and Devon come with fishing lakes on your doorstep, plush hot tubs, golf courses within the site, children’s pools and playgrounds and more.
Situated in the most beautiful locations, browse our pet-friendly UK lodges and cabins for the perfect holiday with everyone in tow!
How To Select The Right Break For You
How To Select The Right Break For You And Your Dog
It is important to check how many dogs are allowed before your booking and if there are any extra charges.
Usually, there can be an extra cleaning fee based on the number of dogs you have. A number of places allow you to take 1 dog for free and change for additional dogs.
Some breaks only allow one or two dogs due to the size of the lodge, others all for up to 5 dogs.
